Talk about data is everywhere these days. Big data, data analytics, data governance, data analytics, the list goes on and on. But the one big question for continuing education departments is how can they use the data they collect to benefit the organization?
First, take stock of the data that your department is collecting. Are there other ways you could be collecting additional kinds of data? There are all kinds of information about your attendees that can be tracked: class attendance, attendee demographics, course completions, and other important metrics that can help you get to know your attendees and potential attendees better.
So why would you want all this data? First, it’s much easier to market to attendees if you know who they are and what interests they may have. Secondly, you can better serve current attendees by knowing their needs and being able to offer solutions. For example, if one student completes an introductory HTML course, you may want to send them information on the next level of class, Advanced HTML. If another attendee has been missing a lot of sessions in a certain class, you may be able to send them information on tutoring. Predetermining attendees’ needs and offering helpful solutions not only helps the attendee, but helps the department with higher retention and repeat registration rates.
Another example of helpful data usage is determining any areas where changes should be made. Perhaps a particular classroom location is difficult to find and therefore has low attendance, or another classroom lacks the AV equipment necessary for a media course and receives low ratings by attendees. Tracking this data can show staff where potential problems may be so they can be fixed in the future.
More complex data analysis can also be extremely helpful with marketing efforts. When studying demographic data, maybe you find that people with a certain job description and income level tend to take courses relating to a certain topic, like Finance. Using this information, you could send information about a Finance program to those potential attendees, or advertise the program in places where those attendees tend to be.
By collecting and analyzing important data, your continuing education department can benefit not only itself, but the attendees it serves and the staff it employs. Data analysis can be the driving force behind departmental success if you know how to properly implement it.
